Poems

Borders separate our countries, but A-T ignores boundaries and changes people's lives throughout the world.

A young man and two young women from two different countries share with us their own reality of living with A-T...

What's a Drop of Dew to do?
Reflections of an Adolescent's Birthday
by Scott Butler

This birthday brings feelings
Familiar, yet new.
Tis' like the dawn of day
And the early morning dew.

Gone is the night with its twinkling stars
And the halo that surrounded the beautiful moon.
Ahead to the east, just below the red ski,
The sun awaits. It will be here soon.

We're caught in the middle and a little confused.
What's a drop of dew to do?

Remember the night
So comfortable and cool?
We were partners with the stars.
We talked to the moon.

I grew and gathered strength
While the mighty oak slept.
And you covered the fields,
while the willow wept.

Refreshing the flowers
To make them again bright,
Oh, dew drop..
We certainly made the night.

Look forward to the sun.
It has much in store.
The power of its rays
Are just at the door.

God made its warmth
Especially for us two.
We'll not burn off
As some say dew drops do.

I'll ride high into the sky
As I journey through life.
Your presence will also
be needed up high.

To form the clouds
And then gently come down,

Bringing smiles to faces,
As soonthing rain, you will return to the ground.

And so, dew drop..
Look forward to the sun and back to the night,
As for me,
I'm taking some fatherly advice.

Enjoy the middle
as long as you can.
Not now boy.
Not yet man.

Gone are the toys,
Bicycles, and G.I. Joes.
What lies in the future?
Only God knows.

One thing is as certain
As certain can be.
Fathers and sons
Can be great teams.

Tears and laughter
Are made to be shared.
May He grant me the privilege
And always be there!

Who I am
By Thomas Roberts-Wierzbowski

My wish to walk is just out of reach
Like an apple too high on an apple tree.
My wish to run
Is a fire burning in my heart.
My hands want to draw,
My feet want to get up and dance forever,
My eyes want to read better.
My ears want to hear...
"There's a cure for your condition."
My mouth wants to open up and yell at the world:
"Why?"
"Why did you pick me?"
"Why couldn't it be someone else?"

My heart feels bad that they can walk and I can't
My head says it's good that I'm doing someone else a favor
If I could walk
Then somebody else couldn't
I want the whole world to know
I'm proud
of
Who I am.

About Me
by Sara Drohan
I have very strong feelings
and a very good imagination.
When I watch movies
I feel like I'm in them.

I can dance.
I can sing.
I can climb mountains.
I can do... anything.

But that's not real life.
I can't dance
but I can sing.
I can't climb mountains
but I can write poems.

I can't do everything
but I do have feelings.
I have feelings just like you.
I'm a normal person.
The only difference is,
I'm in a wheelchair.

I can think.
I'm very smart
but I'm not quite like you.
I can't do everything
but I can smile
and I can laugh.

That is who I am.

I have brown hair
