Background

As a result of the Trans-NIH A-T Research Working group, the NIH has developed a Program Announcement for A-T to:
- encourage basic and translational studies,
- determine how the symptoms of A-T develop,
- stimulate the development of resources to further A-T research,
- accelerate research into promising therapeutic approaches for A-T and
- stimulate progress in A-T research through encouraging and facilitating interdisciplinary interactions.
This Program Announcement uses three different NIH grant mechanisms:

The traditional NIH research project grant mechanism PA-07-272 (R01) http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-07-272.html

The NIH Exploratory/Developmental grant mechanism PA-07-273 (R21)

The NIH Small Research Grant mechanism PA-07-274 (R03)

Partnership with the NIH

A partnership has been set up between the A-T Children’s Project and certain NIH institutes participating in the Program Announcement for A-T. In this partnership, applicants who submit grant proposals under the Program Announcement, but who are unsuccessful in obtaining NIH funding, are encouraged to authorize the distribution of their NIH review summary statements to the A-T Children’s Project for funding consideration. In addition to the summary statements, the A-T Children’s Project will also require that the applicant submit a modified grant application based on our grant proposal guidelines (http://www.atcp.org/Grant_guidelines.htm). Investigators should note the following:

• The A-T Children's Project is currently focusing its funding efforts on grant proposals that:
◊ explore the neurobiology of the ATM protein
◊ facilitate translational or clinical research for A-T

• The A-T Children’s Project funds one- and two-year projects up to a maximum total direct cost of US$75,000 per year.
