Running for A-T in the AZ!!
Ataxia-Telangiectasia is a lethal genetic disease that attacks children. It causes progressive loss of motor skills and predisposes them to cancer and immune system problems. Kids appear healthy at birth. The first symptoms of the disease include poor balance and slurred speech. Most A-T kids are in wheelchairs by age ten and often do not survive their teens. There is no cure and no life prolonging treatment.
The A-T Children's Project is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support and coordinate biomedical research projects, scientific conferences and a clinical center aimed at finding a cure for Ataxia-Telangiectasia. Advances in A-T research will benefit other diseases such as Cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal as I run in honor and memory of those kiddos fighting A-T in the AZ Marathon, January 20th, 2013!
WHAT IS A-T?
Imagine a disease that combines the worst symptoms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, immune deficiencies, and cancer. Children with A-T are usually confined to wheelchairs by age 10 and often do not survive their teens. Because A-T is a multi-system disease, scientists believe that A-T research will help more prevalent diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, AIDS, and cancer.
